Thanks Sighman and Orion! Sorry for the belated reply, it must just be the scene I've been working on for the challenge at the DAZ Carrara forum (been working on it way too much). I'll try out a couple of othe scenes later today just to make sure it isn't something unique on my system. The scene I'm working on has been a bit unstable, so it's probably something in it.

Sighman, if it is just this one scene, and not my system, I have a couple of ideas about what might be causing it. It is probably too big to easily share, it's got Enchanted Forest from Stonemason, a G2F figure wearing Genesis 1 and V4 clothing, an older dinosuar model, a freebie model from sharecg, a model I made, and a few other things. I've tried adding a second G2F figure several times to this scene, which would always result in odd behavior with the Octane plugin and a Carrara crash after a bit of time. Carrara/Octane would also start acting oddly, and within a few minutes it would crash, while working on the Octane shaders for my own model that wasn't UV mapped. After UV mapping it, I can import it and work on the shaders without any issues ( I recall reading somewhere that Octane needs models to be UV mapped). I think that the model from sharecg, or one of the other older models may not be UV mapped, and be the cause of the odd issues. The more I've thought about it, things started behaving oddly about the same time I added the sharecg model, which coincidentally was when I upgrade to the latest version of the plugin.

I'll let you know what I find out.

Sorry for the slow reply, I got way too focused on getting my project done. It seems that my problem with changing post processing and imager settings causing ORVP to reload the scene (start over) was/is an issue with the file/scene I was working on. I've tried several other projects and a few new projects, and haven't experienced it again.

The only theory I have is that it is a floating point rounding issue. I don't know if you know much about how floating points are represented in a computer but lets just say that they can get twitchy with certain numbers. 1/3 for example cannot be fully represented by a floating point value and the closest we can get with a 32 bit float is something like 0.333333 or so. Anyway, the last digit of precision is twitchy and the seemingly same calculation can result in the last digit being different. When a comparison is made they might not actually be equal from a computers point of view. So my guess is that you have entered some twitchy value into some property of the kernel and when I do a comparison it sees it has a difference and restarts the render.

You can use the ORVP to just save the render target settings to an OCS file. Can you just save that and send it to me?

I'm not understanding if this release is using the latest Octane SDK 2.11.1 anyway or if I have to do something to get that before I apply your 2.11.0054 test.

I am having to use PMC on a particularly dark internal scene (no removing walls etc is possible (apart from a bit of one wall)), and it looks great but it's so slow. I understand the latest 2.11.1 has up to 30% speed increases so I want to make sure I'm getting that.

Having applied the 2.11.0054 test I'm not seeing a speed increase so I'm wondering what I've missed. Thanks.

p.s. I'm animating/rendering episode 10 and it's pretty stable. Some minor bugs but nothing that's impossible via a workaround.

Cheers

If you want to know the exact version of Octane the plugin uses then open the log window. And yes, it is using 2.11.1. The main speed increases were to Direct Lighting and Path Tracing via a new Kernel pin called Coherent Mode. Do you really need the caustic calculations of PMC or would Path Tracing be good enough?

Is anyone else having problems updating, or doing a full download of the LiveDB? I tried running the update and it crashed Carrara (and continues to crash) with 37 materials left. All I get is that useful message from Carrara "An error has occurred", clicking on either Cancel or OK results in Carrara crashing.

I tried downloading the entire DB to a new directory in case I had a corrupt file that was causing the problem, and that also crashed with 642 left to download. The text display on the ORVP also flashes quite a bit during download. I tried the last (previous) version of the plugin and experienced the same results.

This is with C8.5, Win7 Pro, downloading to the default location (\Documents\DAZ 3D\Carrara 8.5\My Presets\My Shaders\LiveDB).

Yep, my bad. Will be fixed in the next update.

I really wish I knew more about Carrara to be more helpful. I haven't installed the newest version yet simply because I wouldn't know if it was user error or a bug that was causing me problems. Would we say so far that this seems to be a stable build?
