All the background towers are displaced. Displacement + Dirt + Glossy mat.
1280 x 720, PT, 800 samples, 8 diffuse bounces, 5min/frame avg., 2 Titans.

Is the animated sky an HDR sequence which lights the scene. Looks cool.
We've found these are one of the best HDRs out there for lighting and shadows. Crisp shadows. Thomas Suurland is an incredible 3D artist and he has quite a few useful tools out there:

Yes, we use the Max plug. Images are loaded with the 'sequence' button ticked.
Not sure about standalone, sorry.

I just re-read your original post. Can I clarify
do you mean that the window detail etc on the towers is displacement, or do you mean the towers themselves are displaced from the ground up? If the later, how are you texturing the window detail? If the former, ignore my stupid question
