Hi

I'm doing an interior and could use some quick and dirty tips to optimize rendertime/quality.

I have attached an Direct Light version and a PMC version.

The DL took 10min to render and the PMC version 46min to render.

I find the DL a bit to 'clean', but the PMC to slow - is there some way to improve DL quality or a trick to optimize PMC?

Both renders had 400 samples.

I have added the PMC settings.

I know I'm taking a shortcut here, but a fulltime job, transport, family, deadlines and age, are hard to combine with new software :-/
And I know there is a lot of very talented people in this forum :-)

Thanks :-)

What kind of material are you using for the glass? If you're using a single plane and using a specular material, it would speed things up if you used the glossy/falloff trick — use a glossy material with a falloff map connected to the opacity. This lets a lot more light directly into the room compared to the specular material. You may not get faster MS/s, but it should clean up the noise quicker. If you'd like to have color to your glass, you can use this tip, which is a similar method, but mixes a glossy and specular material.

hi riggles

Sorry, I should have told that, I'm using a single face / glossy and falloff for opacity.

Thanks :-)

have you tried the Direct Light kernel in diffuse mode instead of ambient occlusion mode?
should be faster and cleaner than PMC with a scene like that ;)

Hi bepeg4d

Just tried using diffuse mode, and Direct Light sure looks nicer, but it then gets slower than PMC - can this be right?
