How does Octane render quality compares to modo rendering for example?
How close are they?

If you manage to render a photo realistic cup in both, then they are exactly the same in quality. If you throw a terrible model and texture into Modo and a brilliant model and texture into Octane, Octane will produce a better quality render every time.
The point is, there's more to rendering than the start button. Octane is unbiased, and extremely fast at producing clean renders. Give it a try and see if it can, in your hands, produce the quality of image you're after. If it can't and Modo can (and you like to wait) choose Modo. Easy.

Any comparison is only meaningful if they are apple to apple.
modo is biased and Octane is unbiased.
I would also like to know the answer to CGicore's question but I would appreciate if the comparison can be broken down into:
1) modo (biased) vs Octane (biased)
2) modo (biased) vs Octane (unbiased)

Modo can also be unbiased and is in fact, by default, using an unbiased method of sample distribution. Unbiased simply means a perfectly distributed random noise of sampling in the cases of rendering. Octane's main benefit over modo is that is is a physically based spectral renderer as well as being mighty fast for being so.

A good image rendered is a good image rendered, but if the job demands accuracy, then spectral renders are the way to go.
Cheers.
