Personally, i think grass geometry will look better than hair particles. I have seen people use hair particles for grass before and it never really works for me.

Yah, I've seen some bad ones, but for short grass it doesn't look too bad. I also wonder if it will be more memory saving than using the modeled grass method. It would be be useful for scenes where grass isn't too noticeable as well.

For my own,I use real (modelled) grass at short/medium distance, and texture in background. Texturing the ground also helps to use less grass tufts. I also use crossed billboards for plants and grass. They give good results at medium distance, but the amount of alpha planes slows down the render.

Thanks for the tip, I never would have bothered with ground texture (my bias is that it will look bad) but from far away I can see it being useful. At the moment though, I'm doing an architectural rendering and the grass wouldn't look good at the back as a texture. Not far away enough.

Interesting program. But I don't think I want to spend $40 a year on it yet. As much as Blenders scattering system could be improved a bit more I can deal with it so far. Looks like a really good program though, may give it a shot some day. The ray scattering intrigues me.

A heads up for you scatter people, I just released 1.5! It's packed with various new scattering features: http://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic. ... 70#p197761

I don't know any specifics about Blender so if there is missing stuff I can look into getting that added in PS.
