BUG REPORT :

Well that's more of a feature than a bug but anyway,
It's related to auto focus and opacity

Let me try to explain as best as I can, let's say you model a house and aperture is set to something like >10 so that the focal point is a bit specific and things closer and farther that that become blur. Now asume that auto-focus is checked. Now play with the cam, according to how you move other things focus and others blur, BUT if you make a wall opacity=0 to make it go away and you put this invisible wall infront of the cam, the cam faulty focuses in that non-excisting wall and everything behind it blurs!

To make a long story short, if an object has opacity=0 is should be ingored as an object on auto-focus. This would be a valuable feature on Octane

Thank you!

How does the Autofocus pick it's distance?

1) is it the first surface hit by a ray from the camera position aimed toward the camera target?
2) is it simply the distance from the camera to the camera target?
3) is it the distance to the point in the center of the screen?

I'm not really sure which it is, or how it works.
I think we should have a focus point included with the autofocus. IOW why does it have anything to do with the camera target (usually called aim)

I personally would like to have it done as follows where the autofocus node has the following controls.
  • Use Legacy AF -> Checkbox to use old method (the current method) or show the new (proposed method)
  • Focal Target -> XYZ Point (pickable using the autofocus picker)
  • First Surface -> Checkbox to determine if the distance is calculated based on the first hit surface with a ray sent from the camera pos to the focal target(checked) or if unchecked, simply use the distance to the Focal Target.
a new AF method like this would solve a lot of the little annoyances of repositioning the camera. Which is supposed to be one of the coolest parts of a real-time rendering program. But if every time you rotate around the object, slide sideways or doly in or out, if you have to repick the focus? that hinders the process of setting up a snapshot. It would also solve the problem mentioned above. If you can set the focal target to be a 3D point, you could position it anywhere... including behind a window.

I was going to say have a switch called "Ignore 0-Opacity Surfs". But I like cakeller98's idea.

Right click anywhere in the scene and you will get a list of materials. It even works with autofocus pick. So you can actually pick through walls...
