I'm trying to view a small oject 'close-up' in the rendered viewport, but find it disappears into the camera before I can get close enough. It does it in both perspective and othographic view. Any ideas?

In the camera panel, there's a setting for the clipping (min and max), try changing the min value. But in orthographic mode the camera distance shouldn't matter, so just move the camera a little more away from the object.

Id does matter for Octane. So, for ortho camera - you can play with this setting too:

Oh, i assumed he meant the "camera"-camera. For me that setting is gray when watching through the camera and has no influence.

Sorry I shouldn't have said 'camera', I did mean just viewing in the viewport (not through a camera). Changing the clipping distance sorted it. I had to do it in the properties panel (N), not in the camera setting though. It does still clip, but only when you're very close.

Thanks for the help
