hi there,

As the title suggests, i've a couple of quick questions about normal and bump mapping, perhaps someone can point me in the right direction :)

I've been messing with 3dsmax and poser plugins, and in both i couldn't find a way to improve the results i get with normal and bump mapping. Let me explain: It is just me or looks like that's impossible to mix the 2 type of mapping? I mean, normal mapping and a soft bump to add some detail...on the forums i've found this:

http://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic. ... mp#p171966

...which points me here :
viewtopic.php?f=33&t=37648
(but i'm not allowed to access ^.^)

that said, it's impossible to mix 2 normal maps? (1st one as main and a 2nd normal as detail)..or even multiply the effect of a normal? (please correct me if i'm wrong, the manual does not cover these topics)

which points to the most important question: there is a way or not to work directly on the RGB channels of a normal map? i'm not talkig about 2d/photoshop editing, i mean add nodes and modifiers directly to the normal map channels. like add intensity to a specific channel, disable, filter, add nodes/effects working with a specific color etc.

Am i missing something?

Thanks in advance.

ps. [EDIT] sorry pag. 142 of the standalone version of the manual states: Normals priority over bumps! so forget the first question , sorreh. only consider normal maps mixing/tweak :P

Hi,

With octane, no, i don't know of a way to modify the RGB values of the normal map and it still work. The only thing that works in the normal map pin is an image texture, and you cannot pass it through color correction or anything like that.

Thanks
Chris.
