OK, can you load up this scene and don't do anything other than start IPR and show me what it looks like on your machine?

Cheers mate.

Happily; that's what the community is for.

A ha,
You have no environment.

In bed now, so can't look at what you sent. I had no environment in that scene, but was using environment in other tests. I wanted to see if yours rendered the same as mine, with nothing to complicate it. Did it?

Ya,
Exact same: reflecting black would do that. Or what ever color they have for no environment.

It's not reflecting anything as it's a diffuse material. What you're seeing is the colour of the object evenly lit. The box part works as expected (dark edges white on the flats), but the large flat bit the box is resting on, does not. The black is not constrained to the edge, it spreads most of the way along the surface.

Tried to download your file, but I get an error.

Did you get what I was saying about it not being a 'reflecting the black environment' issue?

Anyone else, perhaps a developer, got anythign to say about this?

So an example of the second question. This object has smoothing, and as soon as I add the Dirt Node, it shades the polygons, revealing the underlying structure, rather than just picking out the bits I would expect a normal dirt node to do.

Also, when I up it to show more the way I want it to in the edges, it shows the polys even more so.

This can't be the expected behavour surely.

Howdy,
Went to work today.

Even diffuse reflects, but that's picking at physics...

And even if it isn't, something about the render is tied to the environment and why you get that look. Without my explanation, I am without a reason why it looks icky brown.

On the other point, yes, I would like an answer to that, as well. Dirt really messes with the normals. And there is no getting rid of that and using dirt.

Still looking for an answer to this from a developer (or someone else in the know).

Or is there another way to ask this kind of question?
