My Poser plugin keeps deactivating at random times. Today I started Poser and it claims my account is not active. When I look at my Otoy account, it claims to be activated, but the plugin refuses to acknowledge it. I know it has access to the internet, but I just get an "error activating account" error message. Besides, does it NEED to activate the plugin on the internet EVERYTIME I run it? The OToy account info claims that if I deactivate the license, I will have to way ONE HOUR until I can activate it again. Jeez, what do I have to do?

I was about to render of a promo image for a product, but once again the plugin decided to deactivate itself. First it stopped recognizing infinite lights from Poser for use in Daylight (will not update position), and now it (again) decides to deactivate itself. This is not acceptable. What could be causing this?

I am using version 1.25.0.17 because the latest version 1.29 (TEST) was giving dozens of popup CUDA error messages every time I changed something on the scene or the materials, so that was not usable.

Please help! >_____<

I will forward this to Otoy to determine what the issue is.

What are the specific error messages you are getting pls? If you post me the cuda log (available from the Log button on the Devices tab) and your octaneplugin.log file, I will determine what is happening.

What graphics card do you have? What compute model is showing up for it in the Devices tab?

But OToy claims the account is activated. It's the plugin that claims it is not, and gets errors messages when I try to activate it. It was activated last time I used it - how can it deactivate itself like this?

I remember the first version of the plugin was storing activation info at a temporary Windows folder that would be wiped out when Windows cleaned the temp folders. Where is the activation file stored now, so I can make sure nothing is messing with it now?

I can't get to the Devices tab because the plugin has LOCKED me out at the Activation tab. I cannot go to any other tab for as long as it won't activate. I have searched globally for this "octaneplugin.log" file, but it's nowhere to be found. I don't have version 1.29 installed anymore, so I can't reproduce the error messages.

My graphics card is an EVGA GTX580 3GB "Classified Edition", and I am running nVidia GeForce Experience here, so I know I have all drivers installed to the latest version.

Hi Ken

I suspect that your activation issue is due to something odd in you Octane cache - but I will wait for a response from Otoy to find out exactly what is happening.

There are instruction for finding octaneplugin.log on the first post of this thread.

You can install the different plugin version over each other and they will work correctly. So it should be easy to install the latest 1.29 version, get an error log to me, then revert back to 1.25. But is you correctly point out, you can't do this until we have sorted out the activation issues.

They think the deactivation problem happens because I don't have an internal network card in my PC. I use an external CISCO USB adapter, which I have to occasionally unplug and plug back again whenever it "forgets" my network. OToy verification thinks I have a different computer whenever the external NIC gets a new ID. I actually do have a mobo built-in NIC, but it has been busted by lighting strike and it's dead.

So I guess the Octane plugin will permanently keep disabling my account because this verification systems kicks in EVERYTIME I RUN THE PROGRAM. This is the perfect case study that demonstrates how copy protection can undermine legit customers by assuming I need to show my credentials every single time I use Octane. It's just perfect.

I'm not really sure about this being a prime example for copy protection discriminating legit customers.
Especially considering your situation, which probably occurs in one out of a thousand.
I think the work Otoy puts into the developoment of Octane - especially the plugins - is incredible and the simple fact that they want to protect their intellectual property is more than legit.

That it's causing problems can be worked out - of that I'm sure.

We have to be fair - I LOVE OCTANE, and I am not claiming it isn't good. I take my hat off for their awesome work making it. The Poser plugin is also great, I love it!

Please let's not mix things up. My issue here was with a licensing method that doesn't work for everybody. OToy could not solve the issue, but they were kind enough to make it easier for me to re-activate my license, since we already know it will keep deactivating at random. It doesn't solve it, but it helps.

That doesn't remove the fact that we both have paid the same price for it, but we are definitely not having the same experience. If this were happening to you, I am sure you'd have a different attitude. For the sake of fairness, copy protection should not be at the expense of the customer.

I understand your frustration but now that you at least know why it's doing it I hope we can keep this thread more on topic for face_off. No need for anybody to turn this into a DRM pro/con thread.

I have found another bug:

I am trying to render the Suzy Q 2 character from RDNA (http://www.runtimedna.com/SQ2.html).
When I open the viewport, I get the following message:

"Left Toe has a mismatch between vertices and textures and will not be loaded into the Octane scene"

The character does not show up in Octane at all, although the materials are there in the materials view.

The character renders fine in Poser 2014. I am using 1.29.0.20

Regards,
Helge
