I know you are still working on the images and design, but one crit I have is the brick is looking very flat. Unfortunately, Octane can't do displacement right now. And it could just be that a light isn't hitting it in a way to show off the bump well enough. If your native modeling package has a displacement tool that will work with Octane, you could give that a try, just a thought.

Are you doing the interior design as well, or just the renderings? The design is very cool, I love the mood and eclectic approach, I'd definitly want to hang out in this place! I can't wait to see the finals of this project, very inspiring!
Aww thanks Bendbox,

I want to hang out there too! It is a restaurant design I am working on in Atlanta GA. The theme is 'Colonial Caribbean Chic'. I feel the eclectic approach is totally appropriate for this theme. Especially since there is a lot of antique and hard to find pieces stored in the basement already. (like a giant pile of Thonet chairs and iron pedestal tables!). We've done some work for the SLS hotels in the past, and I've really grown to appreciate the 'Starck' approach, so we wanted to use that type of expression here.

Thanks for the kind words, we have been working on the design, the renderings are just a bonus for the client =). (I really wanted to get the job =)

I agree about the brick. It is currently very flat. Probably due to the fact that I am just using the same diffuse map in the bump slot as a 'float image' texture. I need to take the 15 minutes to create a real b+w curve adjusted bump map out of the diffuse. I was just lazy...lol. A combination of the right bump + specular map should do the trick. Also switching the lighting to a more moody-dusk or night situation.

Of course, with all the elements I want to put in, the brick bump as well as curved brick arches over the windows will be coming once the furnishings are all complete. Same with the holes where the fire poles used to go in the floor. They need curved wood borders.

Oh yeah, this is an existing building erected in 1907. It is an historic (former) fire station in Atlanta called Station 11. You can google it if you want to see what it 'used' to look like. ;^) And the best part is....it's haunted!

Best,
O

My solution would be, render the image as long until you see that the problem areas appear.
Then you render an objectmask pass for the objects or areas that have much noise in it and take very long time to get clean.
Then bring the beautypass and the objectmask into any composition software (the objectmask works as alphamask)
and use a noise reduction tool like neatvideo, or else,
on only the noised parts of the image. I often do this with vray layers, if theres some noise i just cant get rid off or only can get controll of it with
ultra high quality settings.

To use this for lights you can create some soft mask around the problem area and use a denoiser on that.

It might not work for any situation but i can help reduce rendertimes and increase quality of the image.

Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks djart,

I have used the above mentioned workflow in the past, quite successfully!

For 3-4 renderings, that workflow works quite well. However, for some projects, our renderings get to numbers like 10-30. So in that situation, I'm really really trying to limit the post work...which is what attracted us to this render engine in the first place. ;^)

I think the case of the noisy lanterns in the first 3 WIPS, our solution will be brute force and simply let them cook much longer.

Also, commercial-photograpy style 'fairy' or 'rim' lighting in the dark areas should help throw more samples to those troubled areas.

The only reason they are 'trouble areas' is just because there is not enough light there. Just like all the good render engines. =)

Thanks for your tips!

best,
O

Ok, now I'm really excited -- I live north of Atlanta, and I know exactly where you are talking about because I used to live in the city. I think It used to be a pub called The Spotted Dog, if I'm thinking of the right place. PLEASE keep us updated on this project, becuase I want to go once it's done!!! I'll shoot this link over to some of my colleagues, also in the area, we are all designers so we all will appreciate seeing the hard work. The latest interior project I've worked on in Atlanta, was a medial building interior, so it was pretty modern and clean, not nearly as "fun" of an interior design as your project here!

Uh, that's so freaking cool!

Tell you what: I believe they are aiming to have their grand opening in January sometime. I live in Toronto, but I've been invited to the opening once they complete the project. I'll give you a heads' up!

I'm just hoping they try and stay faithful to the design. =) Even if they manage 10% of the vision, it still should be pretty cool. In fact, I may be jetting down in a couple of weeks to the site once they start the reno. I believe the last pub that was on that site was called Engine 11. The signage is still there.

I'm sure you know exactly where this is. It's in Midtown, the block directly beside (north) of the Marta station. About a block west of Peachtree (the street where the Georgian Terrace is). I've only been to the ATL once, back in August, so all I know is that teeny weeny area.

Bendbox, It would be my absolute pleasure to keep you updated on the progress of this project. This is an insanely fun project for us as well, since the bread and butter of our business is more on the urban planning/commercial/skyscraper scale.

They haven't even seen this second floor yet...so we are really hoping they respond well once I submit this design.

Keep your fingers crossed!

Thanks for the encouragement. =)

Best,
O

ps. If you want to chat offline, feel free to PM me. Hmmm...is there even a PM function on this site?

Yes, please give me a heads up! That would be great. And I know what you mean with regards to sticking with the design, I deal with that daily!!!! It can be totally rewarding and totally frustrating at the same time depending on what the client does.

Engine 11 is the place I was thinking of, I just googled it. And before that it was The Spotted Dog place I mentioned. Very cool, didn't know it was haunted.

Check it out: http://images.metroscenes.com/images/20 ... com_34.jpg

And Before: http://farm1.staticflickr.com/97/218595 ... z.jpg?zz=1

And yes, there is a PM on this forum, you can either hover your mouse over the post and a "envelope" icon will pop up on the right, or you can click on the person's name and get the PM option as well.

I have a feeling they'll like the second floor, but I've got my fingers crossed.
