100/200 for Preview/Max would be good if it's an easy fix for you. It's just a small
PITA for me to remember to reset the Max... 16,000 is way more than I would ever want or need
especially for animation.

You're right...it's mainly the Max samples that I think should be set to e.g. 200 as default.I just can't understand why do you need to stop the preview render at all.

Regarding the number of samples, I opened Blender, changed them to what I want for a default and told it to save the startup file. It loads my default values each time Blender starts.
