hi - i am on a mac pro 12 core 24GB - mountain lion
first i used an official mac nividia card - the quadro 4000
then i bought one week a go an gtx 680 4GB (from america over internet) - and wow it cost only the half of the quadro - and have - i think more then double of the power to render
i attached a screenshot from a test - with only one card and both togehter and with prio checked.

it is not really safe that i use both cards in one mac - because the power supply for the PCI slot normaly only give 300 watt - my both cards have under full work 349 watt
so i think i take out the quadro again and put in my older mac pro and get a smaler card only for the monitor - but it works.
i can not say anythink about the PC performance - i only run mac.

Hi CBMotion.

We tried at our studio several options, and decided to work with Mac ánd PC.

On the Mac (MacBook Pro / iMac with NVIDIA CUDA) we do the basic designing and compositing. Next to this we bought PC's with gaming cards (SLI GTX 690/Titan) to do all the rendering. Windows systems with relatively slow CPU and RAM but very fast (gaming) video cards are a way cheaper solution for GPU rendering, they just give more bang for your buck than a mac.

Good luck!

just buy a standard pc PSU with enough wattage and plug it into your 680/Titan or whatever.
i work like that with my 580 in a mac pro 12core.
only draw back is that you have to switch on the psu manually before you start your mac.

ps... you need to shortcut the cpu signal on the psu, so that it does not need the cpu signal to run.
u can pm me if you need info about this.

sadly the future for cuda rendering on macs is very very dark. the new 2013 mac "pro" will be a bad choice for professional rendering and it most likely wont have neither cuda card options nor the possibility for multiple gfx cards, how that will affect development for mac... we'll see.

Im running x2 680s in my Mac Pro Hex core 2010.

I installed a 2nd PSU into the optical drive bay to power 2nd 680.

Works a treat! :-)

Edit: I also own a 2012 iMac with a 2GB GTX 680MX – which is basically a laptop GPU. That's no slouch but my hexcore Mac Pro is almost 3 times as fast with the dual set up.

Hi,
i have just updated my system with a GTX 285 mac version instead of the GT 120 and a GTX 590 pc instead of the GTX 460 pc and it's much better now. the 285 is attached to two monitors and the 590, with two gpu, for Octane only. i have an external psu for the 590 and the case of the mac pro is always opened ;)
ciao beppe
