Just made a quick comparison. Render time for all: 2 min.
Octane is Pathtracing (sorry only demo mode), V-Ray is Brute Force (16 Subd) + Light Cache (900 Subd, SampleSize 0,01 Retrace Trshld), Maxwell is Maxwell.
All had the same HDRI.
Really no speed contest here, because graphic card is fairly weak.

Maxell has the most contrast in details, I think.

I have the same issue using PMC vs Direct Lighting. I lost certain thin lines that i would expect to see in the model. I was wondering if it was due to the filter size, so have tried reducing it down to 1.1 from 1.5, but its not helping....

A filter size of 1.5 is wayy to high. 1.1-1.2 is best.
It may be because of the way octane shades its normals, try turning off smooth shading to see if it comes back.

Seeing this post, I unfortunately realized that I`ve turned out to be an Octane hooligan, more than a fanatic that I can not question myself and always react "Octane is the better".
After calming down and reviewing, I strongly aggree with the "filter size" comment. But I have one more thing: I realized that its all about mapping in Octane. You need Normal Mapping. I just can not understand why but in my opinion, "you always need normal mapping, at least -mostly-" in order to get better details in renders. And this makes me sick but I`m still a fanatic. Please correct me if I`m wrong.
