that sounds awkward to control. Do other programs do this?

In that case, how would you use a mix texture?
I like the way it is, gives you the most control.

Just combine them. So if you want 3 materials then use 2 mix nodes.

the way layer shader work* in other software , (mental ray and vray )
is fairly similar to the mix shader but instead of having only 2 shader you can mix more of them ..

the mix texture is plugged between each layer

the result is exactly the same

i just wish i could add more shader input instead of doing one mix shader that plug into another one.. that also plug into another one
just for the sake of simplicity

Yeah it is not the mix material, it is the way you are using it.
what make you think this way ?
please enlight me with your knowledge :-)

Must be a language barrier?
What exact layer shader are you talking about in Mental Ray?

its unnecessary imo to have more than 2 inputs, just make more mix materials and plug them in.

having more than 2 inputs would open up a can of worms.

you can layer shader in mental ray using a special node

since the it seem that i am the only one with that perceived issue i guess that i would have to live with the way it is now :-)

may be it would be more user friendly if i could navigate and organize my flow in a more easier way ?

container /group node ?
i did not found a way to zoom in and out of my graph , am i missing something ?

thank to both of you for your input

they are working on zooming in the node graph.
I'll be happy when that comes too :)

Zooming and auto pan when you try to connect to a node pin out of the window are very necessary. Currently, I often use placement nodes with no value modification as relay to connect from distant geometry nodes !
