I'm in the same situation and mindset as Hoop!
With possibly 90% of materials in any scene being reproduced from project to project the ability to somehow auto convert or auto load materials on import is a bit of a must rather than just a wish.
I totally support the ideals of an interactive environment, as your intro suggests that this is generally the most tiresome part of any testing and my common dislike of UnB'd renders that are slow in initial clean of tests.
Though for materials that have been tested / perfected or even used as reference for new tests the option of applying quickly from a library is essential for arch vis applications and particularly where consistancy and expected results are anticipated.
Also as mentioned in another thread the option to automatically swap out imported low res or greyscale maps used as UV reference in the model to higher quality maps on export or import automatically is almost again essential in lightweight modelling apps such as sketchup!
Plugin Possibility -- just food for thought
