1 and 2, the model for noon, but for sunset 4. (1 и 2 модель для полудня , а вот для заката 4)

Are there any technical reasons why all of these can't be implemented as user selectable options?

I see. Ok. It's up to developers then. But please pick the most realistic model. The one that is in Max plugin 1.10 is just awful.
Number 4 would be my choice from current selection.

Ps. To users who think shadows are too dark or whatever, shadows can always be tweaked using gamma value.
Here's number 4 with tweaked gamma.

Difference between 4 and 5 - only sky saturation. in 5 blue color is not so saturated.

I would say 1 has the best natural look. Not to blueish, yellowish, greenish and the gamma/saturation is perfekt.
I also like the shadows a lot...
