Hi there,
what happend to the pricing of live-plugins?
Was it not around 99,--?
I have octane Standalone and thought about buying the Max-Plugin (later for Softimage and Cinema 4D too), but now I must see it is the same price as the standalone version?
Why am I forced to buy an additional standalone license for a "live-plugin" while it self cost the same as standalone?
Cant I just buy the live-plugin?
The demo for max is already working without standalone version, so I am asking myself why am I forced to buy a second hidden license with every live-plugin for nothing that I will/would never use?
Just to make a double sale? I cant believe it.
Now,,, will I be forced than to buy for every plugin a standalone license in addition?
3 plugins plus 3 x standalone = 6 x price?
And just in case of 3DS Max...
Does it really make sense to pay 379,-- for a Max "live-plugin" while Max already has the fully itegrated iRay GPU renderer?
What are the benefits against iray?
Is there a comparison chart I have not found?
Sorry,,, but I am really confused,,, can someone please help or/and clearify?
Cheers,
Can

I am no expect on this, but my understanding is that the 3ds plugin is now out of beta, so not the same price as the other "still in beta" plugins.

You would only need 1 OctaneRender Standalone lincese, and that would work for all the different OctaneRender plugins (assuming they are all running on the same PC).Now,,, will I be forced than to buy for every plugin a standalone license in addition?

I can confirm Paul is right, you only need one standalone license to run as many plugins as you want on the same machine.face_off wrote:I am no expect on this, but my understanding is that the 3ds plugin is now out of beta, so not the same price as the other "still in beta" plugins.

And yes, 99EUR is the usual beta plugin price, whereas the 3ds Max plugin is no longer in beta.
Thanks
Chris.
Hi there,
bad for me,,, thought I would be reminded via newsletter before the price change.
Thats life,,, not everybody can have everything she/he wants,,, right?
I bought the Octane standalone while back, but never get into it.
The UI and workflow with the free plugins for Max, Softimage and Cinema 4D was not so easy for me.
Now I will stick for a while with the good old cpu rendering and see what the market offers at a later point.
If someone interested,,, I would like to sell my Octane standalone license, because never used it and wont use it.
Please send me pm if you are interested in.
Thanks for clarifying.

Hi there,
just want to inform that I can not sell my Software!
Otoy prohibites selling a buyed license.
It was my fault not to read the licensing carefully,,, sorry.
I would also like to leave some words about those "till grave" licensings.
I think it is a big error to urge customers with those licensings.
- New interested customers can be frightened away
- Customers would not buy or can not effort are permanently prevented from being paying customers and maybe also paying for future upgrades or more
- Customers like me, hating those urging licenses, forced away to other similar software with a more fair and customerfriendly licensing
- Maybe not all, but some pirates would also get legal with the possibility by buying a cheaper used license
Just a litle explanation why it is bad for OTOY to treat customers this way like in my case.
I really did not needed octane yet and wanted to turn it to money without profit, just for 99,-- bucks I have paid for, because it was my private version.
On the other side I thought to buy octane licenses later on after live plugins for max, softimage and cinema 4d have been released alltogether through our TV/Film company I am working at.
We have four workstations and a "tiny" renderfarm.
Now,, what lost is a potentially customer who cannot effort octane or would never buy it for the actual price.
I think I will never upgrade octane standalone because I am not conform with it and never buy the plugins for private use because the "till grave" licensing if I am not to forced to buy.
And I can not make a positive decision for octane in our company and will have a look at other companies not treating their customers like this way.
I am also forced now to contact friends and collegues I have recommended octane to warn about this "till grave" thing.
I understand game industry doing licensing this way, because a sold game will not bring further profit to the developer after the first buyer sells his played game to another person, because there is no upgrade to pay for or plugins, just maybe DLCs not everybody buying.
But I can not understand why a software company prevents himself from getting more customers, because even a used license will bring money after a customer sells his license, because the updates, upgrades, plugins and more,,, instead of the forced customer maybe will/would never upgrade or use it anymore.
Hey Otoy,,, not wanted to offend,,, just a little bit push for rethinking your licensing politics.
If you are running your business very good with this licensing politics, everything is fine and you wont miss customers like me.
Now I have to think about how to take octane with me to my grave when it is time.
As known,,, "THE LAST SHIRT HAS NO POCKETS".

@Can : Hi, I am just an other Octane user like anybody here. I just want to say that software licenses (almost any software licenses) are a contract taken individually between the first buyer, who accept the license conditions when purchasing, and the software company. You buy an individual right of use under some conditions, you don't buy a product.
This is the general rule. You can't resell as well your Microsoft Windows OS, even if you have wrecked or sold your computer.
Since the beginning of my activities, I have bought many more Windows licenses (upgrades after upgrades) than the number of computers that I own.
Each two years I purchase a new version of Magix Video editing software. I have one version installed and the CD of at least four previous versions in a box somewhere.
I never sold the previous versions or gave them to someone else : it would be illegal.
There is imho nothing specific in Otoy license system.
The only thing users were right about complaining happened in the early time of Octane, before Otoy. It was the fact that Octane suddenly required full time internet connection to work, a condition that was not in the license when most of us subscribed to it. This has been solved and is no more a problem for a while.
Best regards,
Philippe.
