Refractive Software®/Otoy® is proud to announce the availability of a new version of OctaneRender™ for Maya®
The world's fastest and most feature-rich unbiased render engine that integrates completely into Autodesk® Maya®.

Maya® Version Requirements

This release will work with Maya® Versions 2011, 2012 and 2013 / 32-bit & 64-bit on MS Windows operating systems.

Notes regarding features/functionality

OctaneRender™ for Maya® implements almost full functionality of OctaneRender™ standalone inside Maya®. Materials from the Live DB are currently not available.

COMPATIBILITY AND OCTANERENDER STANDALONE REQUIREMENT

To run OctaneRender™ for Maya®, you need to also have an activated OctaneRender™ Standalone copy activated on the machine you wish to install the plugin onto.
You cannot purchase and use only the Maya plugin and use it without also owning an activated copy of OctaneRender™ Standalone on your machine
.

HOW TO PURCHASE LICENSES

Go to our online shop here: http://www.refractivesoftware.com/shop/

If you do not own an OctaneRender™ Standalone Edition License yet:
You can purchase both the OctaneRender™ Standalone Edition and the OctaneRender™ for Maya® Edition as a reduced price bundle, purchase the bundle priced at 179€

If you already own one or more OctaneRender™ Standalone Edition licenses you want to pair the plugin with:
Purchase an "OctaneRender™ for Maya® Beta License" priced at 99€

You can also purchase a 3, 5 or 10 pack of OctaneRender™ for Maya® licenses,
just like OctaneRender™ Standalone Edition packs.

OCTANELIVE

Just like OctaneRender™ Standalone, the Maya® plugin product also needs an additional OctaneLive license and be activated on a machine.
This has to be done in the plugin interface panel in Maya, and is covered in the included PDF manual.
It can only be done after an OctaneRender™ Standalone license is already activated on the machine in question.

BUG FIXES SINCE LAST RELEASE:
  • Fixed bug in .ocs export (sometimes it did not export and complains about camera).
NEW FEATURES SINCE LAST RELEASE:
  • New Octane engine. Full rework of lot of plugin code, so it is the test, unstable version (in comparison to stable 2.58p). Write me about bugs - I will fix them as quick as possible.;)
  • Added Octane Falloff Texture.
  • Added Octane Color Correct Texture.
  • Added the instances support.
  • Multithreaded voxelizing realised: now the more processor cores you have, the faster you will voxelize the scene. On my 4 cores Q6600 I've got the ~1.5M polys test scene voxelized in about 5 seconds, almost 4 times faster than in previous versions... It is the unstable test version, so I think I will try to optimize it even some more in later versions...
KNOWN ISSUES IN THIS VERSION:
  • I did not optimized the LIVE-mode separate meshes refresh yet, I will do it in later versions. Thus, so far you can only refresh all meshes of the scene at once.

Hi JimStar,

This may be an issue with the engine but I'm getting the following results from a simple poly sphere. No instancing involved.
This happens in all of the render kernels.

First the sphere with a non smoothed octane shader - result as expected.
sphereOctaneShader.jpeg
Now check the smooth attribute of the octane shader on - weird shading
sphereOctaneShaderSmooth.jpeg
With the octane shader smooth off and one level of geometry smoothing - result as expected
sphereOctaneShader_geoSmooth.jpeg
Now turn the shader smooth on again - really weird result :(

Geometry is not inheriting transforms from it's parents. Only transforms directly on the objects transform node seems to have any affect. I have tested this on both instanced and non instanced geometry with the same result.

I haven't tested much of Octane for Maya since it's public beta release. This is the first time, but it crashed on me the moment I clicked on the create spec material button from the shelf under Octane tab. Also, somehow, everything seems to take forever to respond now.
Please give a bit more information on how does the instance work in Octane for Maya.
I also encounter that after assigning octane material to mesh and then open hypershade cause hard crash.

Not yet, it is an experiment. I need to see, how it will affect current 3dsmax scenes of users.
