This is a test scene I was using when doing various trials and errors. Basically two objects and materials. The main speed difference seems to be related to final output rendering with the Octane3dmax plugin. It comes close to nearly 2x slower. I can do more tests if need be.
There also seems to be an difference in output with the exposure settings. The settings for both the plugin and standalone are an exact match.

final Output render for plugin took 11 seconds compared to 7 seconds with the Standalone version.

I think you should test a more complex scene....

stand alone also seems to have a bit less noise if i compare the two scenes.

I was actually just doing a this in 3dsmax for playing around with the plugin release and testing the new features like instances and happen to do some tests comparing the plugin with the standalone. But even in this simple scene you can tell theres something up with speed. I did not think a complex scene would make a huge difference, but might try if it does.

This 2 images are different. You have to use the same brightness and the same colors.
Can you upload max file and ocs file?
