I've only been able to have emitters display a very diffused emission, even when using an .ies that shows a harder edge representation in it's definition, but affects the scene like the other lights... really diffused

if you can show an image, it would be easier to tell. i had never problems with that (without ies); a tiny light source, much power, somewhat close distance and shadows sharp like a knife...
The obvious is that which is never seen until someone expresses it simply
