This is a Alpha release of the OctaneRender™ 2027.1.Alpha_3.0 for Houdini™ plugin compiled with the Octane 2027.1 Alpha 3 core. This 2027.1.Alpha_3.0 release is available for the latest Houdini production builds on Windows x64, Linux.

Houdini production builds supported by this release: 20.5.684, 21.0.729, 22.0.368, 22.0.429 and 22.0.459.

If you are not sure if your Houdini version is compatible with the plugin - just run it and you will see an error message in case of incompatibility.

Linux Note
On Linux only default Houdini builds are supported.
This means that for Houdini 20.5, 21.0 and 22.0 gcc11.2 builds are supported.

New features

Known bugs
On Linux, MPlay IPR may not be working. If you are having problems with it, please switch to QT5 IPR and disable "Render to MPlay" in ROP nodes.

RELEASE 2027.1.Alpha_3.0
=============================================
PLUGIN FEATURES AND FIXES:
Octane Core changes:
  • Octane OpenPBR has a version setting: New Octane OpenPBR materials use OpenPBR 1.2. Houdini's native mtlx OpenPBR and materials from
  • scenes saved with earlier versions stay on OpenPBR 1.1, so they render as before.
  • Temporal Denoising toggle removed: from Render Target and Octane Render Setup. Temporal denoising is now always on.
  • Polarization filter for cameras: Thin lens, Universal and Realistic Lens cameras have new Polarization intensity and rotation settings, in Render Target, Octane Render Setup and Solaris camera settings.
  • Visibility cache for the Planetary environment: in Render Target, Octane Render Setup and Solaris render settings.
  • Float image output type: The Float image texture can output Float or Color3.
  • Displacement mode shown on the Displacement node: A new "Bake mode:" line shows whether Octane bakes the displacement as a UV atlas or with normalized UVs. It appears once the node has been rendered, and hides while its texture is changed until the next update. Displacement
  • now also has a Projection input, for displacement with non-UV projections.
  • New MaterialX support from Octane: Burley Diffuse, Conductor, Dielectric, Generalized Schlick, Oren-Nayar Diffuse and Sheen BSDFs, Flake 2D/3D, Artistic IOR and new roughness helpers.
  • Houdini's MaterialX BSDF nodes can now connect to Octane material layer inputs and outputs.
IPR improvements
  • The IPR snapshot now matches the current render region / film region.
  • Ctrl + mouse zooms the canvas in render region, film region and snapshot compare modes; tooltips show when canvas pan and zoom are available.
Solaris
  • Camera polarizer settings and the Planetary visibility cache (see above).
  • MaterialX open_pbr_surface renders as OpenPBR 1.1, matching Houdini's MaterialX definition.
  • The Displacement node's mode is written to the Octane log (Solaris can't show it on the node).
  • Fixed octane:* camera and light edits not updating the render under Hydra 2.0.
  • createPackageFileForOctane_NoSceneIndex.bat should be no longer needed, and will be removed from future releases, so please report any problems with createPackageFileForOctane.bat
Fixes
  • Fixed a crash when clearing the Tile Grid image node's File List.
  • Fixed reloading instanced analytic lights losing their instance color.
  • Fixed the Texture Switch input slider having a huge maximum.
  • The per-GPU "Use priority" option in the Octane options was previously ignored, and GPUs used for denoising got priority instead.
  • Demo version: the IPR's "Copy Image to Clipboard" menu is hidden, as it isn't supported there.

Note
From 2025.1.Beta_1.0, Octane plugin for Houdini uses Houdini package file. Each build ships a script (createPackageFileForOctane.bat for Windows, createPackageFileForOctane.sh for Linux and Mac) to help create the Octane.json file as below under C:\Users\<username>\Documents\houdiniXX.Y\packages on windows, ~/Library/Preferences/houdini/XX.Y/packages on Mac, or ~/houdiniXX.Y/packages on Linux.

Code: Select all

{
    "enable": true,
    "env": [
        {
            "OCTANE_AUTOSPAREPARAMS": {
                "value": 1
            }
        },
        {
            "OCTVERSION": "<path_to_plugin_directory>"
        },
        {
            "HOUDINI_PATH": {
                "value": "$OCTVERSION"
            },
            "HOUDINI_MENU_PATH": {
                "value": "$OCTVERSION/config/Menus"
            },
            "HOUDINI_SCRIPT_PATH": {
                "value": "$OCTVERSION/scripts"
            },
            "PATH": {
                "value": "$OCTVERSION/bin"
            },
            "PXR_PLUGINPATH_NAME": {
                "value": "$OCTVERSION/dso/usd_plugins"
            }
        }
    ]
}
Important Note
2024.1.0.2 fixed the problem that the layered material nodes cannot be loaded properly, however this fix affects all layered material nodes and OSL material nodes in existing saved .hip files. When loading a .hip file for the first time using this build, it's necessary to adjust the connections of these nodes. Once the file is saved with the updated connections, the issue will be resolved.

Common Issues and Solutions
- If the plugin doesn't work at all, set HOUDINI_DSO_ERROR = 2 in houdini.env and check for messages in the terminal.
- If you're missing libglut.so.3, install the freeglut package.
- If you are having any issues with the Deadline - please submit a support ticket to the AWS.

Happy rendering,

Thank you !

Super noob question, I already have Octane installed for the 0.268 version and when I launch "createPackageFileForOctane" obviously it tells me :

"houdini22.0\Packages\Octane.json already exists
Do you want to overwrite it?

Is there a way to keep Octane OctaneRender 2026.5.0.0 on Houdini 22.0268 and OctaneRender 2027.1.Alpha_3.0 on Houdini 22.0459 ?

The current createPackageFileForOctane doesn't support it.

However, there is actually a way to do this if you are keen.
You can manually make a copy of the Octane.json under houdini22.0\Packages\, say OctaneForH22_0_459.json, change line 2 "enable": true to
"enable": "houdini_version == '22.0.459'", and change line 15 with the path of the plugin for OctaneRender 2027.1.Alpha_3.0. Remember that you have to user "/" for path separator rather than the windows path separator "\".
And you also need to change line 2 in the original Octane.json (you can also rename it to OctaneForH22_0_268.json if you like) pointing to 2026.5.0.0 to "enable": "houdini_version == '22.0.268'".

But you will need to remember the json files and later on when you run createPackageFileForOctane, the Octane.json will also have "enable": true for all H22 which will probably override the settings in other json files.

This could be a bit confusing or hard for managing the versions when you have many json files. So you will need to use this carefully.
