Virtual textures
(available from version 2026.1 Alpha3 - 26.01)

Virtual texturing allows to use huge textures with an optimal memory usage.
See more information there:

Virtual texturing can be enabled in image textures, like the 'RGB image' texture:

Virtual textures cache size:
Use Octane Preferences: Material tab:
Select the size with the parameter 'Virtual Texture cache size (GB)'
Octane Preferences - Virtual texture cache size.png

Virtual textures cache location:
Use Octane Preferences: menu Tools/Explore Octane Virtual textures cache Folder to open Windows explorer.
This should be a folder like C:\Users\xxxxx\AppData\Local\OctaneRender\cache\vtex
You can delete those cache files, but you may need to close 3dsMax when files have been used.

A new texture type 'virtual' is displayed in the Octane Viewport info options : "Tex: rgb NN, rgb64 NN, grey NN, grey16 NN, virtual NN.":
viewport - texture statistics.png

This can be enabled in Render settings / Kernel tab: Enable stats in viewport, and Render statistics customization :

Known issue:
When turning on Virtual texture, the preview in Material editor may stay black.
To activate the correct update of the preview, you may need to open the Octane viewport, and refresh the texture by clicking on the Reload button, or using the 'Refresh texture' option in the context menu of the Reload button.
