Trying to animate lights across a spline (hair render enabled on spline), using w coordinate and gradient -- typically what I do (without w coordinate) is just animate the uvw transform to shift/scale the gradient. (technically transform DOES work -- but I can't SCALE the gradient down to make it repeat)
aiming for little dots parading across the spline, ideally I would control the look of each small dot from one single gradient... then scale that gradient to make it repeat

the W Coordinate texture is designed for mapping an Hair from root to tip, so you need to use it as source of an Octane Gradient node, for mapping it in a different way: But why not using geometry dot lights with MoGraph on the spline?
