Hello,
What type of rendering speed improvement can I expect over Mantra which is CPU based for a 'typical' scene on a mid level GPU (running Houdini on a Dell XPS 15 , NVIDIA 960 GPU, quad i7's)? 10% improvement? More?
I'm primarily interested in particle and fluid sims in Houdini.

Sorry, not an Houdini user, but you should be able to try with the demo:
https://render.otoy.com/plugindownloads ... 4_demo.zip
It is limited to 1000x600 pixels, so you need to compare with mantra at the same resolution.
But consider that GTX 960 is quite old, and it is the minimum GPU you can have, since it only scores ~45 in OctaneBench:

For example, RTX 3060 can from 6x to 8x faster than GTX 960:
