Hi, I purchased Octane years ago and have only recently gotten back to using it. I payed for some upgrade a while back too (octane 4), and it currently says I have all access on the Cinema 4D plugin, but I can only use up to version 2019.1.5 (which works with my old gpu)? But it does not let me render with my new gpu (3080 ti), instead giving me the error: "no Cuda device found". I tried installing 2020.2.5, 2021.1.1 and 2021.1.2 (all of which I can download from the download section of my license) but all of them say my subscription ran out or could not find a license? Would appreciate some help.

Hi,

Your license is still Octane v4 and the RTX cards won't work with Octane v4. I think it could work with v2019 but either way, in order to use newer than v4, you would add maintenance to your license: https://home.otoy.com/render/octane-ren ... e/#upgrade

Alternatively, you can get a studio monthly: https://home.otoy.com/render/octane-ren ... ns/#studio

Just make sure to reinstall if you get studio since it's a different tier (Downloads > scroll down)

Thanks for the info. Could you or anyone clarify:

1a) So I have to pay another 499 euros to upgrade from v4 to 2021, to be able to use Octane for C4D 2021.1.2 or newer which has support for the 3080ti? Using this link: https://render.otoy.com/shop/upgrade.php

1b) And once the 1 year included maintenance has passed, I will still be able to use 2021 with a 3080ti, or will it revert back to v4 and I have to pay another 499 euros?

2) If I have just the v4 license (which is apparently useless to me now that I've swapped out my GPU), and I pay 19.99 euros for one month of OctaneRender Studio Subscription. Will I be able to use the 3080ti with Octane for C4D (2021.1.2 or latest version) and be able to cancel the subscription after one month, or?

Kind of difficult justifying paying 499 euros for a "perpetual" license, if a year or two from now it doesn't support the latest GPUs. Especially when I mostly do 2D work these days, and only occasionally land something that requires Octane.

Oh, so after I've payed 499 euros for 2020.x (from v4), I can pay 199 euros next time to upgrade to 2021.x or whatever? And this is "perpetual" licenses, not subscription stuff.

Sorry for late reply.

This would have been true in the past but OTOY is no longer offering perpetual licenses beyond v2020 so I don't recommend this route. v2020 is the latest perpetual license offered so it would upgrade to v2020 (which is of course older than v2021) so that's why I don't recommend it.

So after the 1 year passes, you would fall back to v2020 which can support the 3080ti.

Correct, you can just cancel the subscription after one month, no issues there. You'd be able to use the latest version which supports 3080ti.

This is a legitimate concern with other players like NVIDIA involved. For your use-case, monthly is probably best. It lets you use latest version which allows latest GPUs and you can cancel after 1 month or after 6 months.

Thank you so much for clarifying! I guess it's not that bad to go the monthly route. Since I rarely have work that requires 3D, but when I do I definitely want to be using Octane. Thanks again :)
