Hi..
This is important and acescg is very poorly implemented in the octane plugin for max.. I have seen Greyscale Gorilla workflow and it's so easy... here it's not working like that.
I get the workflow.. i know octane is a spectral render .. no IDT for now.. only ODT for the output.. ok.. but that's not working fine...
It's not working as paride posted in a jpg screenshot which is the same way as Greyscale Gorilla youtube video. I don't know if it's a bug of this version or what.
This attachment is a workaround i did for myself. to have an exr rendered with the frambuffer of max keeping pixels above 1 alive. But it's not in ACESCG. It's in ACES2065-1... and i have to convert it to ACESCG in comp to match the colors.
NOTES for the screenshot attached:
A: Whatever i put there... the render is always being saved in => ACES2065_1. If i put ACESCG.. it's not saved in ACESCG.
B: If i put something there.. all pixels above 1 are clipped when saved to the exr file... so what's the point of using this? to preview? Well the preview is wrong... if you put ACES:SRGB.. it does all wrong...
i tried turning on force tone mapping on/off , gamma hack.. all combinations... and i am not satisfied why it's so difficult to get it like in cinema4d...
Hope someone can point me in a better direction... I just want to save a perfect ACESCG exr file with no clipped pixels.. that's it...
pd. i did all this in vray too... so i have a reference point of comparison...
thanks
OCIO AcesCG workaround so far...

I know the workflow in AE.. i do vfx for film usually... i can help you out with AE.
You just have to not to use AE color management... and use OpenColorIO Plugin...
Do you have it? Also you have to download de ocio config files...

yes i have the plugin and i have the ACES 1.2 config file (same im using with octane)
what i can get to work properly is all the sequence of ACES-OCIO in octane to EXR... pretty confusing (i saw your discussion post of the all gamma hack on or off and its consequence on the gamma of the imager-camera etc/// confusing to say the least)
lets hope paride can make a DEFFINITVE post on how to handle all this properly

Hi
this is my current setup for using OCIO-ACES and exporting and is the one that works with AE (i mean..the image looks closer the the Octane viewport)
im seeing something really odd, though.. If you save from Octane viewport (EXR 32 etc) the image has a different color profile
that if you save through 3ds max Frame buffer to a MultiLayer EXR and use the exr Extractor in AE.
for all this to somewhat work in AE i have to put the ODT input sapace " ACES - ACEScg" output space "utility - curve - sRGB" other than that the image looks terrible (i've tried a lot of profiles)
IF we dont get feedback about this im opening another post to get attention. is that work?
cheers

Hi MartinBoom,
your setting seems right but it’s recommended to use ACES 1.0.3
in any case try to take a look at here, I hope it could help.

Hi Paride!
thanks for the reply..
what about output config?
1) i mean in the EXR output area in kernel you can choose the colorspace of that EXR (to be linear SRGB or aces or Acescg) if i save
from viewport is this part of the setting is taking effect or it isn't?
2)is this setting have any effect if you save the EXR renders pases from Octane Viewport?
thanks
martin

Hi,
one more thing. why Is the ACES 1.03 suggested insteaad of 1.2 - as i understand it they improve things in each version. ?

this is my after effects setup... from top to bottom. And it's working fine insdie AE:
layer 1 => here the ODT which is => "ACES - ACEScg" to "Output sRGB" (this layer is a guide layer.. not to be rendered if you export to exr. But yes if you export to a mov for srgb monitor)
layer 2 => your color corrections... (you can overxpose to check if all overxpose nicely

layer 3 => ocio=> from "ACES - ACES2065-1" to "ACES - ACEScg" (you change the linear aces2065-1 that octane renders to ACESCG linear)
layer 4 => octane render.exr (imported as preserved rgb, color management off, 32 bit on) You should see it very dark (as your are seeing it linear

Hope this helps!
I will give another try again to paride settings... as they didn't worked so far before.
