Hi,

This is a beta release of the OctaneRender™ 2020.2 for Houdini™ plugin compiled with the Octane 2020.2 RC6 core. This 2020.2.0.1 release is available for the latest Houdini 17.5/18.0/18.5 production builds on Windows x64, Linux gcc6.3.1 and MacOS 10.12.

Make sure to use a NVIDIA Studio driver with version at least 456.38 on Windows or 455.23 on Linux to use this version. No driver updates are required for macOS 10.13 (CUDA).

As with all experimental builds, we advise not to use this release for production purposes. We can't guarantee that scenes saved with this version will be compatible in future releases, and we anticipate there being several maintenance releases.

New features
To learn more about the new features and improvements of OctaneRender 2020.2, please check out the 2020.2 XB1 release post, but this is a quick list of the main new features that have been added.
  • Improved RTX performance.
  • Fast Spectral Nested Dielectrics.
  • Denoiser support for the new NVIDIA Ampere devices.
  • ACEScg and filmic processing. New color options available in the Octane ROP node.
  • OpenColorIO Management, Display and Export (OCIO profile). Configured from the "OCIO" environment variable.
  • OpenColorIOColor graph nodes. Look, Profile and View nodes
  • Integrated multi-scatter from volumes or surfaces. Available in the Octane OBJ spare parameters.
  • User generated compositor AOV passes for combining render and light passes in full a compositor node graph.
  • Null material.
  • Spotlight texture.
  • New ray type, texture composite and channel tools shader nodes.
  • Improved color correction node.
  • New chaos texture node.

Crashes every single time i resize the IPR window.
Any plans on updating the Light HDA to use the new Spotlight texture?

Can confirm, IPR resize will crash houdini.

Also, how are we meant to define the incoming colorspace for textures? I can see some weirdly named options in the ROP that sort of hints at ACES support, but its not very clear what is incoming and outgoing and viewing? How do we tell textures files that they are Utility - RGB or Utility Linear RGB so they get converted correctly?

Yes, sorry. I can confirm the IPR window resizing issue. We'll fix it for the next build.

About the incoming color space, I'm not sure, to be honest. All the options available in the plugin are related to the image output or IPR preview. Perhaps you should ask this in the main forums, but I've not seen any option related to the incoming textures color correction or space.

Thanks,

Ok. I've updated the plugin builds including a fix for the IPR window resizing crash. The new 2020.2.0.1 build should not have this problem anymore.

Thanks for reporting it so fast!

Thanks,

There seem to be a bug where the Post process, bloom / glare all of it doesn't work. Doesn't matter if denoise is enabled or not, the entire tab just doesn't do anything (I haven't tested in the IPR fix build yet).

yep,I confirm that here either I have no post-effects at all.

I have this new message which appears at the opening of Houdini.

Code: Select all

[OpenColorIO Info]: Color management disabled. (Specify the $OCIO environment variable to enable.)
And I don't know what to do with it?

Is there a way to display the results of an AOV composite in the LiveViewer ?

In the AOV Composite node, when we create a new layer all the other layers are moved and renamed ex:
if I have 2 layers (1 and 2), when I create a new layer, it takes the name of layer 1, layer 1 is renamed 2, and layer 2 becomes 3.
Why is the new layer not layer 3?
It's a little confusing :?

Happy Christmas!!!

I think that the [OpenColorIO Info] message comes from the Octane core due to the lack of the "OCIO" environment variable pointing to a valid ocio profile. I suppose that it is safe to ignore it.

All the additional AOVs should be available in the OpenGL IPR Window, but if you modify them after opening the window you need to use the option to refresh the passes menu.

About the layers workflow, I think that Standalone has this same behavior, designed to mimic how other layer-based compositing software adds the new layers always on top.

Thanks,
-Juanjo

You need to create a Composite AOV Group and plug that into compositeAovs in Render Target. Houdini lets you plug every output to any input but that doesn't really work in Octane. If you use Standalone, you'll notice that you cant plug a Composite AOV node directly into Render Target. It needs to go into Composite AOV Group first.
