I run C4D/Octane on three 1080ti's. Is there a simple explanation of whether upgrading from Octane V4 to 2020.1.x would significantly improve performance or provide any other benefits? I do a lot of product shots of cars, usually a single vehicle on a white cyc, with the camera dollying around the car. Sometimes I build a shot of a "car lot" with rows of vehicles next to each other. My render times are not terrible but building those car lot scenes can be sluggish. Anyway, I'm always looking for better performance from my existing hardware. I guess the question is, would 2020.1.x provide any?

Finding succinct, current information here on otoy.com is sometimes not too straightforward.

HI,
there are a lot of new features added between v4 and 2020:

But regarding spped, you can see a great improvement if you work with volumes, and if you have RTX GPUs and you are following these rules in your scenes:
  • - Use just triangles (vertex displacement is allowed but no texture displacement) and avoid using shader features that involve geometry, i.e. dirt and accurate rounded edges (these are currently being optimized further) and finally, no motion blur. And as you can expect, a massive number of instances gives a higher boost.
  • - So basically, for best performance: use regular triangles with simple shading, no dirt or rounded edges, no motion blur, and a lot of instancing.
ciao Beppe
