Hi all,

I'm trying to create an Octane leaf material and having some difficulty.

Currently I'm using a Universal material, with the diffuse map connected to both Albedo and Transmission, with a color correction node between the map and Transmission to control hue, strength etc. which works okayy..

The trouble is, if the leaves are curved or on an angle the translucency effect is kind of dark, and the overall feel when light shines through is more like stained glass rather than a translucent leaf.

Just wondering what the best way to set this up is. Other renderers such as V-Ray have a setting specifically for this scenario ie. translucency on single sided geometry, but Octane seems to not have this kind of function.

Grateful for any help on this, thanks :)

Which version are you using?
In latest 2019.1, and 2020, there is a Transmission Type popup, that can be set to Diffuse:

i've tried several ways to do this but they all have the same result - as soon as i make the leaf translucent any specular is lost

i've tried the layered material (Diffuse main + Specular layer, and Glossy main plus Diffuse layer), and the examples below use the Universal material

i've also tried adding a Coating and/or Sheen instead of Specular but very little difference

1st example is with a texture used for translucency

in the 2nd example - with just a value instead of texture - even with only 0.01 translucency the specular disappears

what am i missing?

Octane 2021.1.1

MODO plugin, but also tried in standalone and same result

Dingbat, can you try disabling kernel > nested dielectrics?

no change

i've attached the scene with only a diffuse colour and 0.01 transmission

if you change transmission to 0 the specular will appear as expected

Nested Dielectrics is unchecked

What about this ? Should works fine now. You didn't have any Dielectric/IOR map. Also you can add a little metallic effect.

It looks like Transmission overrides Specular Roughness. When Transmission is ON even a little it switch to its own Roughness parameter that is much lower than Specular Roughness.
