Alpha shadows and alpha channel are not the same...
With Alpha shadows you're able to compute shadows through transparent objets (specular or opacity).
It's a new option in DL. Many people requested it; RS did!

...and we all still wait for the missing 'not consider transparent objects for ambient occlusion' feature ;)

For now we have only bananas :D
In octaneland, alphashadows means that if you have a plane with an alpha, the shadow on the ground is finally cutted by the alpha ;)

I think you are speaking about "Shadow Catcher". It is still a missing feature, as well as "Shadow Caster", a feature allowing invisible objects to cast a shadow (usefull to give realistic Shadows to 2D trees or characters for example). A button in material allowing to disable shadow casting would also be great to create non blocking skydomes and cylindrical backgrounds. Currently the daylight system casts a shadow on the scene if you use a skydome or a background cylinder for environment. I know I asked already many times for all these features... And I will do again ! ;)
