So I set up a cube and started to work on a murky water shader and thought ok it sort of looks good on the outside but as soon as I place a camera inside the cube all of the scattering effects go away. Is there a trick or setting I need to adjust to do underwater scenes?

You can do it with a real volume object, but honestly, that's often not worth the effort or the render hit. With a surface shader, you can just stick a simple plane on the front of your camera and apply your murk shader to that plane. There doesn't need to be any actual volumetric space inside an object for it to work.

Oh wow that doesn't look half bad, I'll have to try that, thanks!
