Well, since the introduction of the hotpixel removal tool and the improvements of the pathtracing algorithm and now with the new PMC I wanted to do this as a tribute to Octane and our friends the "fireflies", lately while testing PMC I discovered sub division modeling (I know for most or all of you is something rather common but since I do mostly archviz stuff I didn't have a use for it) so I watched a few tutorials (thanks youtube) and after modeling a simple glass for some test with caustics, I started with this project in my rare but well deserved spare time ;). It has taken me 4 days between modeling, texturing (all hand painted), and rigging (for that I had to go back to youtube, since this is my first "real" rigg too), to finally put it all in Octane and let the magic begin.
I've mixed all three material types using different masks to have a single material for the whole firefly besides the eyes which are a simple specular material. It's been a lot of fun, and as always Octane has delivered, and it looks far better that what I had expected. I had to go many times back to adjust the mask and tweak the materials.
All the final renders have been done in PT with about 3000s during 1h~1h30m for the ones with just HDRI light, and about 9000 for 4h~5h for the ones with the firefly's abdomen light and a secondary spotlight to shed some light on the subject, plus an HDRI for the enviroment. I tried PMC and for my first test it was faster and clean, but I did something with the lights and now for the same samples is more noisy, currently I'm playing with those setting to get it right, I'll update when I have some PMC shots.
I've just color-balanced them a little but besides that and the logo there is no retouching.
Hope you guys like it. I do, and even got my girl impressed, and she's a tought one ;) and thanks to the Team, without Octane and all your hard work to improve it, it just, simply, wouldn't look good.

Stick to the archvis, you are way too good at this other stuff. You are putting us to shame.

Simply devine.

lol, thanks to all.
I'll try to do some short animation when I get some more time, also I might wait for the multigpu in the next release so I can suck all the juice to both cards.

Ahaha, another cool idea + realization from you... :D

When 2.5 is done, render it with some luggage and stick a "fireflies packing" title on it...
