A few days ago while creating this very simple scene to test the Octane 4 Metallic materials:

I decided to try out the new AI Denoiser. I was using Cinema 4d R16 and the latest build of c4doctane (not sure at the exact build # but it was a stable build) and then my entire PC crashed. It's not a power issue as only my PC shut off (monitors are on the same outlet), and I estimate that I have 400w of headroom on my PSU (1100w @89% efficiency). For other reasons I have just finished wiping my PC and reinstalling all my software, and I experience the same issues. I'm using the latest build of Octane for C4D (V4.01.1 R2) with Cinema 4D R19.68 Studio. I have heard of issues resulting in the AI denoiser to crash octane, but nothing about it crashing entire computers. My PC is fairly powerful and can handle everything else in octane with no issues.

I might also note that it seems to only crash when I adjust the mix on the denoising. I will attach a video showing my issue after I post this.

Cheers, Fedora

Edit 2: Same issue happens with Standalone

Hello I also meet the same problem on my macpro 5.1 3.46 GHZ 56 GB ram. I use a titan X 12 go card. When I use the denoiser it makes me turn off the mac when denoising is calculated at 100% of the image.
I decided to go back on the V3 because more stable too bad to denoiser

Hay All,

on my Mac Pro (5,1 | 2010 | 12 Core) with 2 Nvidia cards (980 & 1080) I experience a complete Shut Down if I activate AI Denoiser.
I think, this is due to the tremendous need of power, that the Denoiser demands from the card(s).
Under version 3 I had no problems - everything worked fine even under full load.
If I choose the 980 for Denoising, that get their support from 3 Sata bays: Shut Down !
If I choose the 1080, it works fine in Editor Mode (Live Viewer), but in final rendering: Shut Down !
...
I think, Octane could have another button in the parameter settings which can be activated - a kind of "use only 90% of Power", or so.
Anyone has the same issue here ?

I would like to mention, that I switched back to Sierra and installed v4 of Octane and at this moment, everything works well (again).
I had massive problems with High Sierra systemwide and so another user, who also switched back from High Sierra to Sierra.

What possibly can go wrong on a 9 year old hardware. . . I'm sure its Octane's fault its not running stable on an obsolete hardware. . .

I'm happy to see it works flawlessly on my 9 year old PC.

I know that's about OOC or resolution. What's resolution and OOC activated?

@aoktar

I think resolution is the issue. Didn't seem to have issue running the live viewer window at like 300x300 but at the typical resolution (taking up 1/2 the c4d viewport on a 1080p monitor) is apparently an issue

Sounds very similar to my problem, but instead of the computer shutting down, Cinema 4D shuts down. My issue also depends on the resolution of the image.

Yes, if your Mac suddenly just shuts down with no warning, it can be because of a spike in power draw. One of our machines is the same model 12 core 2010 Mac Pro, but with two 1080 TIs in it, which are even more power hungry than your 980 and 1080. It had previously been running two less hungry 900 series cards using the same SATA power hack you mention. I had to stick an old PSU on top of the case and dedicate it to the dual 1080 TIs, so it's a bit of a Frankenstein's Monster, but it works fine now with no unexpected quits under heavy render loads. If you don't have one laying around, you can get a used 500-600 watt PSU on ebay for less than $25.
