In preview mode when windows are resized, or side panels opened via N or T keys, rendering re-starts. This does not happen in stand alone. Is this a bug, or a limitation of blender?

Hi Pegot,

in Preview Mode the Render Size is set by the Viewport Size not by the Resolution in the Render Tab.
Changing Viewport Size will retrigger rendering.

Retriggering rendering the Scene when changing visibility of N- and T-Panels can be prevented by enabling
"Region Overlap" in the Blender User Preference Settings under the System Tab.

Every change in window size will restart rendering because it changes the render size. Preview window size is not fixed in Blender. To prevent this you would need to create a separate window with fixed size and have render preview there.
This also happens in Standalone when you change the size of the render in Film settings.

Both good solutions. Didn't know about "Region Overlap" - Thanks!
