Hi!

I know this is something that has been covered plenty of times in the past but are there any plans to re-evaluate Octane's displacement implementation? The whole exploding geometry thing makes it useless to me like 90% of the time. I like making my own greeble textures and mapping them onto rough ship models for quick concepting and most of the time the geometry has parts which make Octane's displacement go nuts with big gaps and seams all over the place. Now I know this is normal and I know you can sometimes make things look okay-ish if you play with the mid-level (assuming you surfaces are connected on the right shaped corners) but with Arnold I don't get any such results at all. No matter what my mesh looks like I can box project a displacement map onto my geometry and it will follow the contours of my mesh without any gaps at all. Is it possible at all to make this work with Octane as without it working properly I'm starting to find myself realising I might not be able to use it as much as I had hoped.

Also, is there any possibility we might be able to be able to use other nodes with displacement such as math nodes (add, multiply), or mix nodes etc? Again, in Arnold I can combine different displacement maps in the node network to create new and interesting displacement (using finer maps for more high frequency details for example).

Most of all I'd really like to be able to adjust the levels of the map before it is fed into the material so I can adjust the contrast or clamp the whites or blacks.

You guys are doing an awesome job and I know you have you hands full but these could be significant improvements for being able to get materials looking just the way we want them.

Thanks! :)

Kraig.

Hi Kraig,
please, share with me an example of your scene with displacement, even via PM.

Thanks as always beppe. I'll send something over tomorrow when I have my current job signed off.

Cheers :)
