Render instances broken?

I've got a ton of cloners and turning on render instances while having a subd over the whole null hierarchy causes the instances to no longer show, nor render. If I turn off the subd surface generator, they show up. What am I missing here?

Figured it out. You cannot put a cloner under a subd, at all, or things with instances disappear.
