C4D users have something called Octane Scatter.

Where is this feature in Max?

Please don't suggest Iforest/phantom scatter/particle systems etc. C4D users don't have to use them.

Hi Paride

Thanks, but that doesn't respect instances or proxies.

Though v3 was going to sort this?

Hi Rik,
Many users work with Forest Pack, presumably developers are on Pflow, I'll investigate your questions.

Thanks

Seems odd that C4d users have a working Octane scatter but we don't...

There are a lot of features the C4D version has that we don't. Not sure it's fair to charge the same price for a plugin that does less.

3dsmax user use Forest Pack Pro or Multiscatter mostly. We are more plugin and script users because of the nature of our tool.

Pretty crap tool then if it costs thousands per licence for 3ds max and then we have to pay again for plugins whereas c4d users are sorted for free by Otoy.

Otoy promised instance scattering tool with v3 which almost made up for the ballache of wrecking the materials.

Has this been delayed/ignored because not many people use 3dsmax?

Feels like their attitude is to just let us buy plugins and come up with workarounds instead of making it work properly with max's built in scatter.

In my opinion I better spent some extra cash for a professional vegetation plugin instead getting a half decent scatter tool made by a company specialized on render engines.

Only thing I have to complain about is the missing edge mode in Forest Pack to made decent borders.

It's a Max SDK limitation. You can't "read" single elements of built in scatter tool. SDK only gives you the whole mesh.
At least i couldn't figure it out when i wrote my last render plugin.
So Otoy either has to write their own scattering tool for Octane (like Corona developers have done it) or you have to use 3rd party plugins.
