Sorry, I have to bring this up again.
I noticed, that when my internet connection is very busy i.e. when I´m uploading something, my scenes in Octane take as ten times as long to load, and even longer before they start to render.
Why is there data exchange over the internet going on, when I load my scene?
No matter what exchange there is, I don´t think this is tolerable. This is not only a matter of privacy but also a matter of being able to use any kind of software independend from the condition, my connection is in. A few days ago, my provider had some problems, and I had no internetaccess at all. What do I do in such a case?
I understand the importance of protecting software, I do not undertand, why I need to be online to work with software I paid for.
I hope you guys at refractive software come up with a suitable solution soon.

Best regards

I haven't been paying attention, until I downloaded Octane tonight on an old tiresome laptop and tried to install it on my I7960 + GTX480 (without internet connection).

Now Octane Live make sense.

My internet connection is lousy (wireless mobile), I will use it on my main PC to active and register software only, otherwise that is it, I don't want it connected to the rest of the world.

No offence intended, but Octane Render is no longer an option for me now due to my current access to the internet.

I am diligent when it comes to copyright in any form of art/software, and respect the artists/developers needs to protect their interest, but even in this day and age not every person is completely and constantly connected to the world wide web.

In short, I am sorry to say but OneBigTree nailed it with this comment:

Hi guys,

Without octanelive our software would be cracked and we would go bankrupt, and as the result no more octanerender.
You can't expect to get software such as ours for only 99 euro without restrictions.

If we charge 5-7x as much, this would not be a requirement, as we could survive off the fewer users that pay more for a license, while others use cracked versions.
Unfortunately we can't do that with beta software.

Trust me, we know very well the advantages and disadvantages of the system, but right now it's an absolute necessity to keep the company alive during the beta process, after that we will re-evaluate our position.

Then again, nowadays an internet connection is not a luxury thing, soon most of your software will run on cloud systems and you won't be able to do much at all anymore without an internet connection, so you might aswell prepare.

Hey radiance,
trust me, if I could get a faster internet, i would. But it just isnt possible. I have a 1M connection, and can´t get anything faster here. It´s just not possible.
And I have nothing against copy protection via a livelink. I have a problem, when it turns out octane is exchanging data when loading my OWN scenes, which are my property, and noone elses. Really.
That, again, is not tolerable. I have software for around 15000 $, all licensed. All of them internet activated. NONE of them relies on internet, when loading my project. I think this should be possible with octane too.
And honestly, do you really think, a livelink couldn´t be cracked?

But anyway, I even understand this is a beta product, where a livelink would be justified. But if you keep it up that way for the release, noone I know will work with it. And there goes your profit.

Think about it.

PS: I never expected Octane to sell for 99$, this was your decision. But you wouldn´t get your beta phase financed if you wouldn´t. You already save a lot of money this way.
