I'm fairly new to graphics cards, so please excuse my ignorance. I purchased a GeForce GTX 960 and set it up with my mac as an eGPU. I downloaded Octane and everything seemed to be working, but it was a little slower than I was expecting. I checked the video cards on my Mac and it says that I have a Geforce GT 650M installed. Could I have done something wrong when I installed the drivers? Did I get duped when purchasing my card? I got the card from Best Buy online. The box & card look the same in person that they did online.
as far as I understand, what You're seeing now is Your mobile chip that You already got in Your macbook ;)
could You point out, what You did to set up Your eGPU? my guess You haven't run script or haven't modified any files - that might be the reason why You do not see GPU. & have You jump started Your PSU by shortning on/off pins on 24pin cable?

I should probably mention that I'm running El Capitan.
Prior to installing the Nvidia drivers, the only card that was listed was the Intel HD Graphics 4000. I don't think the Nvidia Geforce GT 650M was on the list, but I could easily be wrong. I tried installing this card on a couple computers so it's been difficult to keep everything straight.
I have an RM 850x power unit with a AKiTiO Thunderbolt 2 PCIe Expansion Box. I ran a cable from the Nvidia Geforce GTX 960 to the AKiTiO and powered the card with the 850x. Before plugging in the thunderbolt from the AKiTiO, I installed the Nvidia drivers on my computer. I attempted to modify them as in the video "The Necio" created (I found it on the forums here) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfKb8Tc ... pu_mwYZwX0 . However, I couldn't edit the scripts. I downloaded & install the Aux tools for Xcode, late July 2012 edition. However, when I right click on the Nvidia Driver, flat package editor doesn't show as an option. I get stuck at that step and probably did something wrong at this point.
I'm able to install the driver (OSX 10.11.6 - WebDriver-346.03.06b01.pkg) along with the CUDA driver without any problems. I restart the computer and it automatically found a new driver available, so I let it download and install the update. After shutting down my computer, I plugged everything in and fired up the computer. The fan on the card starts right up when I power on the Mac. I'm able to use Octane in Cinema 4d, but it seems a bit slow.

I'm pretty sure Your 650m is the one that inside Your Macbook, & external card is still not yet seen.
If I were You & would have little to no knowledge, I'd rather run this script instead ;) downlaod, unpack on Your desktop & follow the guide. Before that however keep in mind You might need to disable CSRUTIL.
Other thing, You just connect Your GPU to power supply & plug it to the wall? Have You shortened 24 pin wire? (so Your power brick would deliver energy to GPU)
I'm not sure, where You are slipping, but..first make sure You deliver power, plug everything as it should be, another thing, make sure You run script, rather than making any manual changes.
I've made more than 5 eGPU rigs lately & three of those were Akitio based. So I'm confident we can make it work ;) let me know how it goes & we'll see what it could be done.
if You need any help regarding to the script, let me know =) not a mac person, but I can try to help You out if it would seem too complex.

You were right. I ran the script and it recognized the card. Not sure how to shorten the cable though. I'm going to do more research on it but if you have any resources that would great. I attached an image of the cord. The left side plugs into the GPU and the right side plugs into the power unit.
