Multiple eGPU setup - possible with Sonnet Echo Express III?

I’m considering to augment my iMac / MacBook Pro rendering power by purchasing a Sonnet Echo Express III, which has 3 PCIe slots (one 16x, two 8x) connectable with Thunderbolt 2.

There are several references on the web about successfully using a single eGPU with this configuration.

However, would it be possible to connect a total of 2 or 3 GPUs using 8x to 16x risers? (The included enclosure can only fit one dual-slot card, so a second or third dual-slot card would have to reside outside the enclosure, or inside a retrofitted, custom larger case.)
