Is this really the animation capabilities?
So I opened up blender, and decided to test an animation with the blender-octane plugin. When I go to render the animation, it opens the program, renders a frame, closes the program, re-opens the program, renders the next frame etc. There is no function for changing video format, as it just a pile of images you have to put together yourself, plus, this method of rendering the frames is as slow as all hell, having to open and re-open the whole time. Are the developers working on better animation support?
i agree. octane opening up for every new frame is annoying and hardly feels efficient.
i have to disagree with you on the file format bit though. i prefer image sequences and (on the danger of sounding like a smartass), major fx-houses do so too.
just in case you didn't know: compositing apps, like nuke, after effects, etc., are recognizing image sequences automatically for you.
then again, would be nice to have a tiff-sequence option. (talking 32-bit).

I read that they will add some sort of aniamtion support but for now they are doing bug fixes/ new render kernal [2.5] / instances/ new nodes.

Yes, and the annoyance you face is related to OCtane, not Blender and/or the plugin.

In addition to being slow, I have trouble with OctaneLive when Octane keeps closing/reopening during animation rendering. After a couple of frames it says I have activated this license on another machine and must deactivate and wait..
Though this seems to be the case every time I switch from using Octane natively to any plugin. It seems Octane recognizes the plugins as different computers.. the constant deactivating and waiting is a bit annoying.

I've been running some short animations every night this week.
Had one instance of the windows message "Octane has stopped working".
After closing that message the next frame kicked in and the rest of the frames rendered fine.
Was able to go back and render the single frame and save it in sequence with the rest.
No issues of budget or deadlines here though, but I can imagine this is a real issue for you guys in the 3d industry.
Surely this will get addressed?

I think a ex/import time of maybe 5-8min + a render time of the same is better, than a total rendertime of 30min from other renderers to become the same quality.
If you have it fast, you need it faster...
This is an unibased renderer, look at the others on the market and then complain.
If you not need the unibased stuff, use your internal renderer.

Doesn't make sense. Iray doesn't have to open and close each frame. Unbiased or not that isn't a real reason or excuse for a un-optimized workflow regarding animation, you are just forcing it to be a reason.
