Hi all,

This is a maintenance release fixing various issues of the previous release and fixing/improving some longstanding render issues, too.

Changes since version 3.04:
  • Added snap tolerance to the preferences, which defines at which distance to the grid points the grid snapping kicks in.
  • Improved colour shadow pass for specular materials with "fake shadows" enabled.
  • Extended the value range of the "max. samples" pins of the various kernel nodes to 1 .. 1,000,000 and limited the slider range to 1..100,000.
  • Tweaked geometry node icons.
  • Added object layer pin to volume nodes.
  • Reduced/fixed self-shadow artifacts at the terminator of point-like lights on objects with very strong and fine bump maps.
  • Fixed bump and normal mapping on displacement triangles.
  • Fixed broken light passes.
  • Fixed missing pane handles after a pane was maximized and then minimized.
  • Fixed potential deadlock if the render threads are still rendering during shutdown.

License tracking change since version 3.02

To implement the floating licensing system we need to keep track of all Octane processes that use a specific license on the computer. This way we only release/deactivate a license when no Octane process is using that license anymore. Originally we used a third-party library for that. Unfortunately there were various issues with that and caused crashes during startup in various circumstances. To fix the problem we changed it to an internal (file based) system in version 3.02. Unfortunately this separates the license usage tracking of version 3.02 and higher from the usage tracking of 3.00, 3.01 and 3.01.1.

-> Please make sure that you only run either version 3.00, 3.01 and 3.01.1 at the same time or only version 3.02 or higher.

Pascal GPU support

This build is done using the CUDA 7.5 and 8.0 toolkits on Windows. On Linux and Mac OSX we are still using CUDA 7.5 + 8.0RC but will switch with the next release. NVIDIA is still looking into various CUDA issues and we haven't done any further Pascal specific optimizations yet, but from what we can tell, the Pascal GPUs seem to run fine so far, and there has been no difference between CUDA 8.0RC and 8.0.

OctaneRender Standalone downloads

To fix a crash during startup when the default layout is created, I had to update the installers/archives. The new version is 3.04.1b. If you downloaded the previous version (3.04.1), I recommend to re-download the fixed version. Apologies for the hassle.

Windows
- 64-bit commercial version (installer)
- 64-bit commercial version (ZIP archive)
- 64-bit demo version (installer)

This is crashing on launch.

I tried deleting AppData\Roaming\OctaneRender and it asked for my login details, but still crashes after login.

EDIT: I went back to 3.04 and that's working

Hmm not good. I could reproduce it after removing the default layout. Let me try to fix it...

I updated the Windows and OSX versions, but the Linux versions are still building.

Is it possible to create a dialog for the batch render job where you can choose which targets to plug in? Similar to the batch script where you can check which ones you want.

Also, if you have one target plugged into your batch render job and then copy and paste that render target, can that new target get automatically plugged into the render job?

this would be pretty cool to have a check box selection or button to make the connections for you upon click. Less looking around and dragging.
