and confine to their white square shadowing? i was told to do this even if it meant bend around normally lighting scheming. like is this still the only way? you can tell youre using squares sometimes and its really fishy/shady/uncool

You can use any geometry you like as an emitter. Otoy have recommended low polygon emitters if you want the highest render speed and lowest noise.

you can also turn the opacity to 0 if the square is visible or produces unwanted shadows. that won't prevent square light reflections, though...

the best way usually is to use an IES profile with the square.
