We are having major issues getting into lots of scenes where we need to use assets from our libraries. Most all libraries online to purchase are for Vray, and the material converter Octane has built in is absolutely terrible. Never gets one material converted right, even simple ones. It takes ages to re-material every object. Corona and many other renderers convert this over almost perfectly every time. WHat is being done to fix this material converter, we are kind of at a stand still if we should continue with Octane on this project.

Hi,

Sorry to hear that you are having issues with your V-Ray scenes.

Material conversions are subject to continuous improvement and support, due to the myriad of edge cases. This is due to considerable structural differences between Octane materials and V-Ray materials. Conversion issues can only be fixed when they are identified. A solution that works 100% of the time is difficult to guarantee, as multiple factors beyond our control impact the effectiveness of the converter.

We can take on feedback (preferably scenes for testing as well, if possible on your end), and improve the converter accordingly. Sadly, there is no stronger assurance I can give apart from the assurance of continual improvement and refinement. Many of our users have been successful with using the V-Ray converter, though we still get failure reports from users with certain cases.

If you are able to, providing some test scenes would be much appreciated. Ultimately, a 100% effective V-Ray converter is difficult to guarantee, due to a variety of factors. We can only promise to take your feedback and improve the converter accordingly. Apologies for not having a more satisfactory response to your issue.

Well if you check it turns most vray glossy materials into specular for some reason.

This particular issue shouldn't be happening. This may occur in the case of some grey-area complex materials, but it shouldn't be a regular occurrence. I would be happy to look into a solution to this for you. Do you have a test scene on hand by any chance? Otherwise, I will get back to you when I duplicate your issue in a basic test case.

Cheers,
Azen

Sorry don't have a test scene, was happening with quite a bit with assets we were bringing into an animation. I will try to set something up at one point of materials to convert.

Hi,

I will run tests on V-Ray assets I have on hand in the meantime. From your description, this issue should show itself.
