Creating high detailed close up landscape shots - newbie

hi guys, i'm really inspired by daily renders at the minute and i'm really intrigued by how locked and loading goes about creating these land scape shots ?

I can do the layout of the land scape but the texturing I cannot begin to understand

look into World Machine? I'm pretty sure that's what LockedAndLoading uses...
