This might not be the best comparisson but I compared some simple geo in Modo and Octane since both have Rounded Edge shading.
Octane seems to lack rounded edge when meshes penetrate each other.
Octane also seems to have trouble doing rounded edge on .ABC files, I tried different settings in the import option.
It would be very nice if Octane's rounded edge was better because right now it is barley useable.

I think Octane version is better.
This has been asked many times. Problem relates to standalone. Nothing to do with plugin.
I suggest you don't bother asking it.
It may be solved in the unknown future.

It was renderd with standalone importing .OBJ files. thus "The exact same .OBJ files was loaded for this comparisson." , nowehere did I say it was renderd with the plugin.
I dont ask, I want to bring to attention how bad it is. And yes if you want a damaged and broken rounded edge Octane is certainly better.

Otoy know that rounded edges don't work well. There was a recent video of an Otoy presentation with rounded edges mentioned for 3.1

Fixed your quote for you....MagnusL3D wrote: ...Octane also seems to have trouble doing rounded edge on all files...
Looking forward to having this fixed in 3.1. At my new job I'm doing all hard surface objects from CAD files, so this will be a godsend!
An interesting point!
As a total hobby newbie to CGI, always wondered how CIG artists deal with the intersection between objects. When new to 3D art, I always assumed artists made everything in one single mesh .. basically because I thought you need that to model proper interaction (i.e. edge) between say a spaceship body and some extrusion out of it (Antenna whatever). If I just stuck an Antenna object into a spaceship body, it looked bad at the intersection .. mathematically sharp, no proper edge.
Properly lighted "edges" between the objects would alleviate that a bit.

This is a really important feature for me. I thought it was coming in version 3.0 but it looks like it might not be arriving until 3.1?
Is there an ETA on this feature?
