Can't download materials with scene outliner undocked

If I undock the scene outliner I can no longer drag materials from the Live DB to my Nodegraph editor or otherwise add them to my scene. If I reset workspace then all goes back to normal. Am I doing something wrong or is this just a limitation with Live DB being used in a separate window?
