Hi, I have been told in the general forum that the standalone has an option to add a separate backplate image.
Please can you confirm if this feature is being developed now or planned for the future in Max?
Thanks!
Backplate Image
Hi,
To apply a backplate image to a 3ds Max scene, tick "Alpha Channel" in Render Setup -> Kernel->Kernel Type to see your background image. Make sure "Keep Environment" is not ticked.
Is this what you were wishing to know? If I have misunderstood your query, please let me know with more specifics.
Cheers,
Maxc

Hi Azen,
Thanks for the reply, as I understand it, this only allows a black/checkerboard background to enable compositing, I appear not to be able to port a custom image into this space.
My goal is to be able to put a custom background map in place separate from the environment hdri lighting map in the Octane render view.
A typical usage scenario is using an HDRI environment and a white backplate to emulate a white studio product shot without having to go into comp...or... again lighting a car with a HDRI but in render view inserting a different hi res background.
I realize it is standard feature in CPU renderers but may carry complexity in GPU architecture, however it has been suggested that it is functional in the core engine so I was hoping to see it in max, I wondered if it is in development or being considered.
Using Corona environment overrides as an example :- Cheers!

Hi Azen and Jimstar,
Would this be a feature you will be considering to develop this year?
The ability to add independent reflection maps also woul be amazing!
Be good to know if even to say it is not on your current roadmap.
Cheers.

Hi,
I will post a workflow, with images, demonstrating how to implement HDRI lighting and a viewport backplate separately. Unless I am misunderstanding the explanation given, the feature being requested is already available to you. Admittedly, the workflow for achieving it could be improved, but it is possible to do this already - thus, an explanation supported with images would probably prove most helpful.
I will try to get that up for you today or tomorrow, depending on workload. Thank you for your patience, and apologies for the belated response.

Hi Azen,
that would be fantastic, even if you could point me to another thread where this is described!
I am shocked I did not know there was a way to put an individual back plate image in without compositing!!
Still I feel a Vray/Corona style checkbox image uploader would be great addition in the future to make it easier!
Many thanks!

Hi,
Here is the workflow:
Start: This scene has one object, and no lighting
Step 1: Press Alt + B to bring up the Viewport Configuration window. Click the "Background" tab. Choose "Use Files:", then click "Files..." and select you background image.
Step 2: In the Render Setup window, under "Kernel", tick "User viewport background". Under "Kernel Type" tick Alpha channel". Make sure that "Keep Environment" is unticked
Step 3: Bring your Environment Map into the scene. Open "Environment and Effects" and drag the Map into the Environment Map
Final Result:
Hopefully this answered your question. Please let me know if this helps you.
Cheers,
Azen

Hi Azen,
Wow, that is great! I had never noticed the 'use viewport background' at the top!
This is the kind of customer support I like
Perhaps in a future build there could be a load viewport background image native in the render setup with the 'use viewport background' next to it?
Might be cool also to create some stickies with tips like this!
Many thanks Azen, great job and thanks for the quick response!
