Hi all,

I would like to thank everyone that has submitted artwork to our new year's competition which has just been closed.
This is truly the most successful competition yet and it will be a daunting task for the jury to select the winners, which I am sure you are all anxious to find the results of out.

UPDATE: Competition is now closed

During this 10 day waiting time, we are launching an additional surprise mini-competition, which is based around submitting materials to the livedb.

The competition rules are very simple:

You may submit as much materials as you like by uploading them to the livedb from within octane 2.43.
Note: it is vital that you submit your materials with Octane Render 2.43 in order to insure full compatibility

once you have submitted materials, post your submitted materials here.

You may either submit a rendering you submitted to the new year's competition, or any other one onto which you add small markers on the objects made out of the material you submitted and some text with the name of the material.

Eg, you submit an image of an interior for example, with many dots and text on various materials so we can see what the material looks like in a nice scene, and know it's name in the matdb. (please also type the category tree, for example: materials/organic/wood/oak_floorboards

if you want you may also attach additional images of material balls showing the materials, but this is not required nor does it impact the jury's choice on the winners of this mini-competition.

Please submit your material marked renderings and optional material ball previews if you decide to render them as replies to this thread, just like all previous competitions.

The prizes for the mini competition are 7 free octane licenses (all will be given to unique participants) provided that we gather at least 200 materials uploaded by all participants together after this mini-comp is over.
if we reach more than hundred, we will offer 5 free octane licenses instead.
If we have less than hundred submissions, the minimum octane licenses given away will be 3.

note that you may either get the license yourself as an additional license, or give it away to anyone else

We will judge the entries based on the following criteria:

- the quality of the materials
- the amount submitted
- the proper categories and naming used when uploading them to the livedb.
- texture free, procedural materials of high realism will score very high, as they are challenging to create :)

We hope you all will enjoy this little mini competition while we go through the tedious task of selecting the new year's competition winners, and remember, if 30 people each submit 300 useful materials, you as an individual will get 270 useful materials in return.
- if your material macro has input parameters that are of good use to modify aspects of it, it will also have a positive impact.

Note that you may also submit texture macros aswell as material macros

EDIT: Here's a little example on how to best submit your entries uploaded here (image is by madcoo), it has 2 materials on it:
An example with only 2 materials
An example with only 2 materials

Have fun :)

Be carefull: small typo: should read 2.43 (next line is correct)

30 * 300 = 9000, so 8970 back :-)

Yeah, thanks I just corrected it, I'm typing this on an iPad and the tactile keyboard sometimes borks. :)

Interested and willing to participate, but isn't 3 days a (too) short period? More complex materials that take usage of procedurals and possibly offer inputs, need more time to create and test than image-textured ones. I'm suppose that under the pressure of tight schedule & quota, the LiveDB will be flooded with carpaints and plastic.

Sure, but the point of the competition is to share materials you are willing to share used in your artworks submitted to the now closed new years comp, and you should use the actual renderings you submitted to display them as explained...

then again, a really nice textured material may be judged better than an ugly and unrealistic procedural.

Just try your best, it's a mini comp :)

I was thinking more about creating materials from scratch for the purpose of this competition. Most of my textures for the new year competition are from cgtextures, who does not allow to share their textures in material packs (even if modified).
